Five years ago HA’s Principal Patron Jason Atherton opened his restaurants on a Sunday, donating all profits from the day’s service to the charity. Social Sunday was born.

Since then Jason, along with a host of chefs, restaurateurs, hoteliers and foodservice operators have all pulled together on one special summer Sunday to raise funds for Hospitality Action.

The great thing about Social Sunday is that it’s up to you how you raise money, whatever works best for your customers and staff works for us. Previous fundraising efforts have ranged from cocktail masterclasses with loyal customers to after-dinner speeches from sporting icons and mini-festivals with barbecues and local bands.

Social Sunday is a great feel-good moment to raise vital funds but also to promote the values of each venue taking part.

There are so many ways to get involved and so many reasons to do so. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Invite a celebrated chef in your region to be a guest chef at your restaurant and charge a premium for a tasting menu.

  • Host a cookery class for local customers pre-service and donate proceeds.

  • Hold an auction/raffle during the week of Social Sunday, e.g. dinner for four, a cocktail master class, or cooking a meal in a customer’s home, donating proceeds.

  • Invite a local celebrity (e.g. from world of entertainment or sport) and create an “audience with” lunch.

  • Invite your suppliers to gift you produce for the day and donate your saving.

  • Arrange a restaurant swap: teams from two restaurants switch venue, offering local clientele a chance to sample food from another region.

  • Apply a discretionary £1 charge to bills for the week of Social Sunday.

  • Donate 50p from a popular dish on the menu.

  • Donate a percentage of takings, or profits for the day after covering costs.

  • Host a family fun day, BBQ, garden party or quiz. Donate the entry fee to HA and host a raffle in our honour.

  • Create a bespoke cocktail and donate the proceeds to HA.

And of course, even if your venue is closed on Sunday 5th July 2020 you can still take part.

By supporting Social Sunday, you are enabling access to a wealth of tangible support, advice and assistance from the experts straight to the member of your team that needs it, when they need it most.

When adversity hits, we need somewhere to turn to and as the UK’s 4th largest industry we have a duty to invest in the well-being of our teams. People and businesses develop side by side, please join us and have a lot of fun raising valuable funds for this amazing industry charity.
In our hotels we held pub quizzes and took a proportion of our Sunday lunch revenue, combined it with customer donations and raised £800, we aim to achieve more still this year, please take part!
